Integral psychology holds the idea of a hierarchy of levels in the development of consciousness. It suggests that a person’s consciousness passes through different stages of development, each with its own qualities, experiences and ways of perceiving the world.
One of the best-known voices of this idea is Ken Wilber, who developed “A Theory of Everything”, which includes ideas about different levels of consciousness. The levels may differ from one model or theory to another, but the general idea is that different levels are different ways of perceiving, thinking and experiencing, and becoming aware of them can support a person’s growth and self-awareness. One of the key ideas in his work is a model of the levels of consciousness known as “The Spectrum of Consciousness”. Wilber’s model describes the levels of consciousness that human development passes through. They form a hierarchy, from the most basic and individual to the higher and more universal. Wilber also stresses that all the levels need to be integrated for a whole and healthy personality to develop. In his model, a healthy consciousness is marked by harmonious interaction and balance between all the levels, while a distortion or imbalance at one level can affect the others.
